Daisy Boo

The cute little Daisy Boo is likely around 3 months old now? She was first spotted at the void deck of a HDB at Champion Way. She was covered in scabs and poo, emanciated and had matted fur. Really in very bad shape.

Slowly bringing her back on her long journey of recovery. Shaved off all the fur, weekly medicated baths to clear the scabs and fungal infection and feeding her nutritious food to fatten her. She weighed 700 grams initially. I bet she has put on weight now.

Justice for Arabbit

September 19, 2015 at 11:01 am | Posted in Animal Abuse, Animal Rescue, Animal Rights | Leave a comment

We don’t know how long Arabbit has been suffering under the hands of irresponsible pet owners. When we took over Arabbit from someone who was so eager to get rid of him, we were fed lies that he was a young rabbit, ate only a bit at his house, possibly due to stress of new environment since he only had Arabbit for 2 weeks.

Upon closer inspection after we brought him back, his teeth were in a horrific state. Grossly overgrown and poking through his upper lip. He couldn’t even pick up food and had a hard time eating! He was emaciated and severely dehydrated. We had a flat rabbit in our hands.

image

image

We rushed him to the vet and the vet had to do bare minimal dental work to quickly get him to the point of eating to prevent gut stasis and stabilizing the elevated kidney parameters.

For 2 weeks, he could eat a special diet of soaked food and also got to run around freely in the garden, like a normal rabbit deserves.

image

Suddenly, he stopped eating and we realized that his teeth were overgrown again and surgery was inevitable.

Arabbit went for surgery. His blood works were not ideal but there really wasn’t any choice. A rabbit that is not eating will just suffer a slow death, not omitting the fact that his bad teeth condition was causing him severe pain.

After sedated, a close inspection of his teeth and jaw revealed the worst nightmare. His teeth were poking in all directions, jaw was misaligned so badly a tooth even pierced through his tongue and some teeth were pushing into the lower jawbone, on the verge of breaking the jaw! It was a major and risky surgery.

After the surgery, Arabbit sat upright but shortly after, he collapsed. His body just couldn’t take it and he fatally succumbed to the injury he had carried with him for a long time.

Rest in peace, dear Arabbit. We will bring to justice whoever that irresponsible owner was. He or she allowed you to suffer in silence for so long. Despite the suffering, you were never stingy with your affection, trust and gratitude to humans. Humankind has lots to learn from you. Binky run free…

Eight human years ago:

A human, munching on a “Pao” (bun), pointed to a small young cat with long ears and a big nose went “Look! A cat that looks like a bunny!”

He was hiding under the bench, attempting to take shelter from the rain. The human found an umbrella and took him to the nearest shelter under the void deck.

She started feeding the cat occasionally as there are regular feeders. The cat eventually migrated to a few blocks away and was seldom seen.

Eight years later, he re-appeared, looking filthy, sickly and in pain. He couldn’t eat as his mouth was hurting too much. His sad eyes pleaded “I am in pain. Please save me.”

The Pao-eating human, 8 yrs later, took him to the vet and assured him that he will not only be on his road to recovery, he will also have a forever home.

Bunbun’s surgery date is 15 March 2015. Not only does he have badly inflammed gum and rotten teeth, he has a cyst lump on his thigh which may be cancerous.

His initial consult bill was about $200 and his surgery bill is estimated to be about $700.

Queen Mimi…saved in the nick of time

Queen Mimi…why the name?  There are 2 meanings behind the “Queen” and you will understand why as the oxymoronic story unfolds.

Got a SOS call from a feeder friend and was informed there was a sickly and dirty looking Persian cat on the 2nd floor of a HDB block.  It appeared hungry and pregnant.

We couldn’t get to her that very night as it was late and she would have ate and gone off in hiding.  The next morning, my feeder friend went to get her and a man who lives on the second floor told my friend to leave the cat alone as he has already called SPCA.  (And hearsay, this same man had abandoned 2 old and sickly cats a while back below the block and the 2 poor cats were so scared they dashed away, never to be seen again.)  Could this Persian be his cat?  Ok, whatever…deal with the numb nut later.  Queen Mimi needs medical treatment first.  As soon as the vet opened, she was the first patient to check-in.

First words from the vet, “I am shocked that she is still alive! This cat should have been dead judging from her condition!”

The Diagnosis:
She wasn’t pregnant.  A series of blood tests and xray were done to find the source of the issue.  The bloatedness was caused by fluids filling up her abdominal area.  Dr. Gino extracted at least 20 ml of brownish liquid from her with a needle.

Afraid that the fluid might build up again, he decided to do a small incision to insert a catheter for draining out the fluid.  Woe and behold, when he did the small cut, the same brown liquid was oozing out, out of control!  He opened the incision larger and found the fluid was everywhere in the entire abnominal region.  The uterus was double the size it should be.  This is a very serious state of pyometra, causing the uterus to be highly inflammed and the liquid, comprising of pus and blood, is extremely poisonous.  Mimi’s body had absorbed a fair bit of the toxic liquid and she was put under close 24 hr observation post surgery, in case she lapse into septicemia or blood poisoning.

Throughout the night she started twitching and panting.  Thankfully, she bounced back!  Now, the 2nd issue is her fractured foot but it is an old injury and there isn’t much we can do about it.  Poor Mimi really went through a lot of crap!!  Could the pyometra be caused by constant breeding?  No one knows, only Mimi.  So was she a “Queen” to be used for breeding?  (She wasn’t spayed initially.)  Doesn’t matter anymore as now she is a Queen.  We are determined to find her a good home where she will be treated like a Queen.

Mimi recovering from surgery:

Mimi’s fractured foot:

Infected uterus and fluid extracted from Mimi:

Now the heart attack:

Mimi’s medical bill is going to be high!  With the blood tests, xray, surgery and hospitalization, the bill has exceed $1000.  I appeal to any kind souls who can help with contribution to defray this bill because there are 2 hospitalization cases for us right now.  The other one you can read here (Dolphin the Rescued Cat – http://wp.me/pi8Bk-4W).  Exact breakdown for Mimi’s bill will be provided when she is discharged.

If you are able to help, please email me at crystal.chakra@gmail.com

Thank you! Thank you!  Kindly help to spread the word as I do not have Facebook anymore.  So I have to depend on kind samaritans to help share this post on their Facebook.  I do have a Twitter feed and you can follow me on @OmcatSG.

Dolphin…back to the vet after a year

August 27, 2013 at 4:23 am | Posted in Animal Rescue | Leave a comment

Not sure if you remember Dolphin the accident cat who got his jaw ripped apart about a year ago.  Here’s the trackback of the story from his first rescue: https://omcat.wordpress.com/2012/09/20/dolphins-tale/

Dolphin is now back to the vet, after 5 days of not eating on his own, and just drinking.  This is just not right.  We send him back to the vet.  A close examination showed blood stains on the teeth and mouth.  So, he is bleeding somewhere internally, no wound in the mouth.

Dr Gino listened to his lungs and that doesn’t sound good either.  There is some kind of gurgling sound, implying some form of fluid (or blood?) in the lungs.  He took an xray and below explains the observations.  The most concerning part is the entire opague body of fluid that is near the abdomen and pushing the liver all the way up towards the spine, where it shouldn’t be.  It should rest on the lower part , nearer to the belly.

Dolphin needs to be hospitalized and pumped medicine to attempt to drain this mysterious fluid.  This condition COULD BE life-threatening.  Please pray for Dophin 😦

On the surface, he still looks like a healthy and happy boy but inside, he is battling this inflammation.  Dolphin was once a fighter who overcame death from the horrible accident a year back.  Let’s pray that Dolphin keeps his fighting spirit and triump over this infection!

We also just took on another rescue case: Mimi (http://wp.me/pi8Bk-4T) and that appeal has been closed, thankfully.  If any kind souls can help with contribution to defray the costs for Dolphin, we would really really appreciate.  The final bill is posted below.  Please also help me share this post on Facebook since I don’t have Facebook anymore.  I will post this story on my Twitter (@OmcatSG) though.  I can easily be reached by email at crystal.chakra@gmail.com

A New Face for Uno

June 11, 2013 at 4:15 am | Posted in Adoption, Animal Rescue, Animal Rights, TNRM | Leave a comment

Last month, we received a FB message from someone reporting he saw this cat on the street.

We had asked if the person can send it to the vet but he said he can’t.  Left with no choice, we appealed for volunteers in the area who could stay with the cat while we scramble to find transport to pick up the cat.  We do not run a SOS hotline, neither do we run a charity.  Whatever charges that are not covered by donations, we pay out of our pockets. But somehow we were lucky and managed to rally enough help to give this cat the needed medical attention.

Here is the cat now, at our shelter.  She has fully recovered and she has grown fat.  We named her Uno.

Uno got a new teddy bear yesterday.  She loves chewing its butt.

Uno’s final bill came out to $212.80. The caregiver in the area gave us $100 to help defray this bill. The balance is $112.80. We would appreciate if anyone is willing to donate funds to top up this balance so that we can free up our funds to cover the animals’ food and medicine at the shelter.

If you are keen to help, please email crystal.chakra@gmail.com

If you want to adopt Uno, please also email me. She has already been spayed.  Screening procedure applies.

An Abused Community Cat

June 1, 2013 at 6:43 pm | Posted in Adoption, Animal Abuse, Animal Rescue, Animal Rights | 4 Comments

A Telok Blangah cat lover called us in desperation on a stormy afternoon to help an abused community cat.  Apparently someone had tied a string so tightly around her hind paw that it had cut into the flesh and became maggot-infested.  The paw was also emitting a foul odor.  The caregiver would only be able to rush the cat to the vet but the vet treatment would be beyond her financial capabilities.

When the cat reached the vet, we found out that her paw was so swollen and leaking pus and blood.  Poor cat must have been in such excruciating much pain.

She had to be put on anesthesia to remove the string that had sunk into the flesh as the swelling had tightened the noose to the extreme.

Subsequently she had to undergo surgery to remove all the dead scar tissues.  The vet bill which included 2 surgeries and a lengthy hospital stay amounted to $1,004.90.

That is not the end of her expenses.  We have to buy Melonin bandages for her daily dressing.  That is an additional $25 to $30 per week.  And she had to have daily dressings for at least 2 months.

This tabby cat has the sweetest temperament.  She is still with us and her leg is almost recovered, except for a small little open wound now that requires daily flushing with saline.  We hope to rehome her because she is really really a good cat.  Extremely friendly and sociable.  We welcome any contribution towards her medical bills, bandage costs, and food costs.  Any contribution will help us free up funds for other rescue cats as well as the cats at our shelter.

If you wish to contribute, please email crystal.chakra@gmail.com.  If you wish to give this lovely cat a forever home, please also email us.

Anyone living in the Telok Blangah area, we hope you can help to watch over the community cats there.  It is one of the high cat abuse area in Singapore and there have been so many reported cases of cat killings and abuse.  They need guardian angels.

Here is the album of this cat which we fondly call “Little Sweet Sweet”. (Initially we named her Nanako but “Little Sweet Sweet” is more apt.  She is really an angel, very gentle and trusting.)

11 Jun 13 Amy $150 (bought Hello Kitty docking station)

Thank you everyone!

Setting an Angel free…

It was a fateful night when Sandy the sepia tabby cat decided to cross the busy highway. She was hit in the head by a speeding car in the fast lane but stood there in a daze, bleeding at the nose, ears, mouth and her eye balls had popped out of their sockets. A second car swerved around her and the third speeding car almost ran her over when a compassionate taxi driver suddenly cut into that lane and jammed on the brakes, halting traffic for miles, sending off a domino echoes of mad honking.

The passengers in the taxi dashed out and grabbed the cat to safety. As they were panicking on what to do with the cat who was still in a daze, a tourist van driver pulled up and gave them a lift to the nearest vet.

Sandy suffered intense injuries and there was nothing the vet could do for her except put her on tramadol. The case landed on us so we moved her to Animal Infirmary for an intensive diagnosis. Here is the report:

Injuries from the accident:
1. Protruded eyes – 1 blinded, 1 questionable
2. Fractured skull and head injuries, resulting in neuro problem (she was moving around in circles)

Pre-existing condition not due to accident:
1. Fractured hip that didn’t heal well
2. Extensive liver and kidney failure

How can a cat, suffering from so much ‘damage’, still hang on to dear life? Whatever that could possibly go wrong in that small body was simply wrong. And through it all, Sandy was an amazing cat, trusting, friendly and rather responsive, although scared, timid and spacing out at times.

We left her at the vet for treatment. If there was even a small fighting chance, we were determined to help her fight, as long as she wanted to. Sadly, Sandy didn’t make it. She collapsed and passed away due to organ failure although her injuries were slightly healing. Her eyes had subsided back into the socket.

Oh well, everything happens for a reason. And poor Sandy has suffered more than what she could bargain for in this lifetime. So, run free, Little Angel. You are free from pain and suffering and we are at least relieved that in your final moment, you were not alone or left dying on the highway.

The rescuers had paid for Sandy’s initial hospital deposits ($300 at James Tan and $300 at Animal Infirmary) and her cremation of $100. The final bill at Animal Infirmary is $1,122.80.

The balance outstanding is $0. This appeal is now closed. All contributions are reported here. And your contribution gives us the means to save other animals.

To contribute, please email crystal.chakra@gmail.com

Below is a copy of the bill.

3 May 13 J $122.80

The Story of the One Eyed Jack

December 11, 2012 at 12:45 am | Posted in Animal Abuse, Animal Rescue | 1 Comment

I call him the “Vagabond Cat”. He suddenly appeared in the community, just out of the blue. An unwelcome visitor, he is not very popular with the colony cats. He comes and goes and the caregiver took pity on him and started feeding him. All he wanted was some nice grub and a good night’s sleep. Dawn comes and he would wander off to lead his vagabond life.

Yesterday, he came back in a disastrous state. He had lost an eye, cause unknown. His eye was bleeding, and the eyeball had ruptured and partially protruding. The jelly in the eyeball was oozing out of the socket along with blood and pus.

So we decided to admit him to the vet to get the infected eye cleaned up. Unfortunately, the wound is more severe than we thought it would be. Not a simple couple of hundred bucks surgery. The estimated bill would be to the tune of $800+. So we have decided to appeal for Vagabond Cat before we proceed with surgery. If we can raise at least half of the amount, we will proceed.

If you wish to help Vagabond in this season of giving, please contact us at crystal.chakra@gmail.com

Sadhu.

Here’s how he looks after a bit of cleanup at the vet. He is currently lodging at Animal Infirmary.
